What We Do

STUDENT ASSESSMENT PROGRAM:

The HRSS Student Assessment differs from the current public school federally mandated Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) assessment, which is often conducted after a significant lag in student achievement has been identified. The IEP assessment is used primarily to document eligibility for use of Special Education services , or for accommodations.

The HRSS assessment is an earlier intervention, designed to guide classroom instruction as well as give teachers and families support for student success, before a student “falls through the cracks.”

The HRSS assessment provides classroom strategies which are useful for all learners, not just the student who is assessed. In addition, the HRSS assessment avoids unnecessary labels often associated with Special Education programs.

Ideally, the need for a student assessment is identified early, before a student drops too far behind in academic achievement.  Parents and teachers are often the first to notice that a student is struggling and this is the best time to try to understand why.

For more information about the Student Assessment Program, please contact Hawaii Resources for School Success by phone at (808) 885-9318 or by email at info@hawaiischoolsuccess.org.

School Support Services

TEACHER TRAINING:

The Schools Attuned® Teacher Professional Development Program helps educators acquire knowledge and skills to support all learners, with an emphasis on students with learning differences. This teacher training has been developed by the national All Kinds of Minds Institute.

The Program offers teacher training, resources, and classroom strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of today’s students. Teacher’s support of each student’s unique learning style depends on their knowledge of neurodevelopmental variation and their ability to adjust their teaching strategies to address those abilities and needs.

Hawaii Resources for School Success is actively working to provide teacher training for educators in the classrooms of North Hawaii public schools.  Currently, HRSS is working with Kohala Elementary School to train all of their teachers by  2010. Teachers can often apply strategies learned to other students in their class.  Administrators can create an infrastructure and climate that further supports effective teaching and learning.  HRSS offers scholarships or financial assistance for some educators to attend training's or workshops on various learning programs.

For more information on the Schools Attuned® Teacher Professional Development Program, please contact Beth Custer at (808) 885-9318 or by email at bcuster@hawaiischoolsuccess.org.

TEACHER WORSHOPS:

HRSS can deliver mini-training's of 1 to 2 hours, as part of a teacher work day or local staff development event.  Mini-trainings often focus on techniques for applying the Schools Attuned® learning plan strategies in classrooms. They can also focus on understanding selected elements of the model as it applies to classroom teaching.  The mini-trainings emphasize specific skills and resources to “take back home” and use in the classroom or at school.  To learn more, contact us at info@hawaiischoolsuccess.org
